*As much as I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooved the Christmas special, I wonder how it played with people who a) don't love '40s and '50s style musicals, and b) aren't ridiculously enamored with this cast. Like, *I* could watch Chris Colfer and Lea Michele mug at the camera all day, but I wonder how casual viewers reacted to it.
I think this is a great point, and some of the reviews I've read of the episode seem not to appreciate the special for what probably amounts to those reasons. Todd VanDerWerff at the AV Club thought it was completely, totally awful, which makes me bristle in massively defensive ways, but I guess I can see not really enjoying it if the special didn't hit your cheese buttons. Honestly, if I didn't love watching those two be hilariously silly, and if I didn't adore old-fashioned TV specials, I might not have had nearly as big hearteyes for it.
I totally laughed at the robot pants breaking, too. Honestly, I'm way more okay with Glee being terrible with things like that if they just acknowledged that it happened, even in a throwaway line, because at least then I don't feel gaslit, you know? And that ReWalk was a hilariously ridiculous plot device (I'm still not exactly sure how Shannon managed to get it in the first place), so a ridiculous wipe-away works for me.
Honestly, I need to start drinking while watching the show, too. It sounds like you've found the best way to get through it by far, and considering some of the spoilers I've been reading, I think I'll need a few G&Ts to stay sane!
